Assessment 2 Details and Instructions
In this assessment, you will form a group of 3-4. Your group will present a case study of a particular
social problem covering: history, context, a discussion of particular discourses surrounding the
issue as well as the identification of strategies, programs or policies for addressing the issues
raised (20 minutes).
Each group will select a social issue of interest such as homelessness, child abuse, mental illness.
Each group will present an analysis of key issues and implications for practice. The presentations will
go for 20 minutes and 5 minutes Q and A. They can include visual aids, use of social media, practice
scenarios, case studies and other creative components. Please avoid lengthy summaries of readings.
Think of how you can engage your audience and yourself in reflecting on the linkages between social
work theories and practice.
Students will be given time during class commencing in Session 3 to begin researching their chosen
social issue. This will involve searching databases for relevant books, journal articles and eResources.
Following the group presentation, each student will submit a 1,000-word overview of theirpresentation, plus a 300-word group reflection. Students will be marked on both their presentation and
the written overview of the presentation.
Your group presentation will be assessed on your:
1. Demonstration of in-depth understanding of the selected social issue
2. Analysis and critical evaluation of social issue using critical social work literature
3. Discussion of at least one human service strategy that has been developed to address the social
issue.
4. Ability to clearly present your argument/ ideas in a manner which engages the audience
5. Team work and individual contributions: timing, cohesion, collaboration
