History of Lion Gate LodgeLion Gate Lodge was built in 1878, it is a Victorian sandstone building surrounded by a beautiful private garden. The lodge was originally home to the head gardener of the Royal botanic gardens, the lodge is located in the middle gardens sits inside the lion gate which is guarded by two iron status of the lion and lioness.
The architect of the lodge is unknown as this house was originally build as residence for the grounds staff, this could also indicate that the build was actually complete by the gardener himself, which wasn’t uncommon for the 1800s as it was such a simpler time for construction and only the wealthy could afford architects and hired labour.
The lodge was built from timber and sandstone with hardwood flooring throughout, over the years there have been many alterations done to the lodge, such as adding electricity and internal plumbing however there is no formal record of this.
There were further restorations were completed in 1989, the lodge received new paint throughout the interior, the original wood flooring was restored, a commercial kitchen was added and the outside of the lodge was rendered. A large awning was added to the exterior of the building to create an open outdoor space for events, however it was not recorded when this installation too place. The lodge undergoes regular maintenance, in terms of fresh paint and new carpet to the upper level rooms.
center87947500As of 2016 the Governors Domain and Civic Precinct National Heritage List Assessment National Heritage Values Statement listed the Lion Gate Lodge as a Heritage site within the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Proposed WorksAs the lodge is a historical building I have decided to keep the integrity of the building itself and remove the existing awning that was added post construction and build an indoor/outdoor entertaining space. There are a lot of regulations when it comes to altering a historical building as you are to keep the look and the feel of the Victorian design, so I feel that the design that I am putting forward actually removes the eyesore awning that is already there and will create a more cohesive space.
The lodge is also used predominately for weddings now days so I feel that this extension will be a great addition to the lodge without having to alter the existing building.
To create this indoor/outdoor entertaining space, I will start with removing the existing awning as it takes away from the original style of the heritage building, and erect a new awing constructed with the same building materials as the existing veranda to create a cohesion between the two spaces and still keep the heritage look about the space.
A garden path with an overhead arbour leading to an additional marquee space located on the grassy area to the right of the heritage building to create an indoor entertaining space for weddings and events. The walls will be a half brick vainer with full length horizontal windows to capture the beautiful surrounding gardens and let in the light.
The wall leading to the open grass ceremony area will be full length bi-fold doors to really embrace the indoor/outdoor feel, the roof with be a traditional plasterboard ceiling with crown moulding and antique pendant lights to embrace the heritage of the interior of the lodge. The exterior brick will be rendered to match the exterior of the lodge to create a cohesive look for the outside and make it look like it was always meant to be there.
On top of all the works that are going to be completed, the lodge will get a fresh coat of paint to the interior of all rooms, the carpet on level 01 will be replaced throughout, the bathroom on level 01 will be renovated and the shower will be removed as there is no accommodation available and the external bathrooms will be renovated as they are dated.
The total gross floor area for the addition of the new indoor/outdoor entertaining will be 36.9sqm which is a perfect sized space for the weddings and events that will be held at the lodge.
Heritage Impact StatementThe works that I am proposing will limit negative impacts on the lodge as it is a separate dwelling located next to the building connected by a garden path and arbour to still connect the two buildings. By doing so the lodge is still stand alone and the new dwelling does not take away from the original beauty and design, the historical façade will also be restored to its original beauty with the removal of the awning that was added in the 1980s.
By also having the new dwelling being a separate space it will limit the amount of traffic throughout the building further preserving it from being damaged by visitors.
The proposed works will contribute to the ongoing heritage importance of the building as more people attend the site for events they are consistently reminded of the beauty of the 1800s design and architecture. The lodge will forever stand as a beautiful
