As the title indicates, we are entering the exciting field of planning for a major event. As major events are huge undertakings, it is essential that we start by having a well-developed plan for… planning!
Plan for planning may sound weird but in this topic you will be able to explore how breaking down a huge project in phases and tasks and assigning specific time for the completion of each task provides clarity, enables co-operation and helps proper allocation of resources.
This part of the module is based on the planning methodology that is applied to the organisation of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Of course, not all events are as big as the Olympic and Paralympic Games. However, the concepts, the methods and practices can be applied in any context and any size of event, if modified sensibly and appropriately.
We will discuss the formation of a start-to-end planning calendar, we will learn how to integrate a client view in our plans and discover how to ensure horizontal visibility across the work of all FAs within the LOC and across all its members.
The topic is divided into three parts. Each of them is followed by a reflective activity, to ensure that the concepts are understood and you are able to apply them.
Task
Compare all of the event planning models and develop a list of the positive and negative elements of each model. Then, using your own experience of project/event planning and the content from the module so far, develop your own event planning model, utilising elements from all of the models we have presented. This is great way of considering the applicability of the theoretical event planning models but also developing your own style/way of approaching how you would plan events.
